The invention made it so that people watching a televised poker event would be abele to see what the players down cards are. This makes watching the hand play out much more interesting.
The next thing that happened was online poker was born. With online poker, you can play from home, any time of the day or night. Online poker rooms started to grow as more people started playing online.
We see a big jump in TV audience size due to the “pocket cam” era. More players are coming to the live events, making winning prizes look like lottery tickets. We have a growing industry, but then poker got lucky.
Chris Moneymaker now wins the WSOP Main Event in 2003. Winning over 2 million dollars. The prize money became huge, because of the increased number of players, mostly online players. With people seeing that anyone can win millions at a poker tournament, poker boomed.
We are now seeing celebrities showing up at the big poker events, where the poker stars are the super celebrities. Thanks to the perfect timing of these events, poker is generating huge amounts of money. The online poker industry is simply a monster, and showing no signs of slowing down.
When you look back, it is easy to see that these events set poker on this new, fast growing, course. This has become an industry that generates billions of dollars annually. Growth is expected for years to come.
