If you’re looking for a movie to get yourself or your family into the holiday spirit, these are 10 guaranteed top picks when it comes to Christmas Movies:

10 - A Christmas Carol (1951)
Based on Charles Dickens’ novel, A Christmas Carol tells the tale of a grumpy broker named Ebeneezer Scrooge, who’s only emotion towards the Holiday season is “Bam-Humbug!” His miserable, cold attitude is reversed when three ghosts visit him and warn him of his impending lonely death. Can Ebeneezer change his substandard ways in time to celebrate Christmas the right way?

9 - Elf (2003) starring Will Ferrell
As an infant, Buddy (Will Farrell) accidentally finds himself in Santa’s toy bag. He is carried away to the North Pole where he is raised as an elf. Since Buddy doesn’t fit in with his elf family, he travels to New York City to be with his real family. Unfortunately for Buddy, his real family doesn’t believe in Santa or the true meaning of Christmas. Buddy takes the opportunity to find himself by reviving Christmas in his family and in New York.

8 - The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Animated
I am a big Tim Burton fan, and any film that can be watched for two holidays gets a thumbs up from me. I pull this one out at Halloween and we play it till New Year’s. The songs are great, the quirky characters are lovable in their own twisted ways, and I can’t think of any other film that has Santa Claus being questioned by a giant gambling ghost. Gets me in the Christmas spirit - pun intended.

7 - National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989)
The cast of “Vacation” returns as the Griswold family prepares for a big family Christmas. The well-intentioned family makes a total disaster of the holiday, ruining everything they touch. A comic gem.

6 - Bad Santa (2003) starring Billy Bob Thornton
Two men disguised as Santa and Santa’s elf set out to rob a mall instead of spread Holiday cheer. An encounter with an 8-year old teachers the criminals what the true meaning of Christmas is. You’ll hear move ‘f’ words in this movie than in Scarface.

5 - Scrooged (1988)
Back when Bill Murray was still funny (meaning pre- “Lost in Translation”) he made this gem of a film. I especially love Carol Kane’s performance as the ghost of Christmas Present, and yes, it’s still kind of fun to laugh at what we thought was stylish in the 80s. The story is, of course, Dicken’s Christmas Carol - but with many more wisecracks.

4 - The Santa Clause (1994) starring Tim Allen
When Santa is killed, divorced father Scott Calvin is recruited to take his place and complete his Christmas rounds. Scott believes it’s all a dream, until he begins to morph into the jolly old man, much to the delight of his six-year old son Charlie.

3 - Miracle on 34th Street (1947) starring Maureen O’Hara
Schmaltzy? Sure. Love it anyway, and embrace that belief that there really is a Santa. Maureen O’Hara is of course stunningly glamorous. Black and white or colorized, it’s a great film.

2 - It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)
George Baily spent his entire life supporting the dreams of his town. When George contemplates suicide, he ends up saving his guardian angel, Clarence. Clarence shows George that he really has made a difference in the town. Is it enough to save George’s life?

…and that brings us to the number one Christmas movie to watch in 2008…

1 - A Christmas Story (1983) starring Peter Billingsley
“You’ll shoot your eye out!” Ralphie’s quest for a Red Ryder BB gun, and the aunt who thinks he’s “a perpetual four” are something we can all relate to. I find something funnier every year as I get older, layers of both irony and that child-like hopefulness tied up inextricably together, as well as the remembered frustrations of childhood. (Let’s just say I sympathize deeply with the kid brother in the snowsuit.) Jean Shepherd’s writing is transferred nicely to film, his voice comes through in Ralphie’s hopes and daydreams beautifully.

There you have it, the Top Ten Christmas Movies of 2008! Throw another log on the fire and get to watching these timeless movies.

To be completely honest I’m one of those people who has a really hard time getting into Idol. When the show made it’s premier I saw all the hype and thought it would never live up to expectations. When the second season rolled around I realized I couldn’t be more wrong. The show continues to not only survive but thrive, and shows following the same model come out like Americas Got Talent. Why good old television can’t make a comeback I don’t know.

American Idol is now into it’s 7th season and it grows larger every year. It’s a very coveted time slot for advertisers to get their products in since it’s audience runs the gamut from teens to grandmas.I have to admit though that this season may end up being a guilty pleasure. I can’t even pry my girlfriend away from the TV when the show is on, and once I start watching something I generally have a hard time stopping.

I love see watching the beginning shows for the awful performances of wanna be idols. By this time around those people who sound horrible on the show must just be looking for their 15 minutes of fame. There are a few really talented people on this season including Michael Castro and Casey Carlson.

I can admit that it’s great that there are many talented people who get found because they are on the show, but the whole reasoning behind it is kind of tainted in my mind. Many many talented artists out there work hard everyday to get the big one and have no hope of ever getting a contract, but these “idols” seem to have it served on a silver spoon.  With a few exceptions, most of the winners turn out to be a one hit wonder. But this could be it, my season to fall in love with this natural phenomena, I just hope it doesn’t cut into my sleep too much.
